To kick off the first installment of getting to know the Ben Sherman Decade Tees, let’s start at the beginning of our story–the 1960s. Some cultural eras stand out more than others, and the Swinging Sixties are no exception.
Across the board, the 1960s were a time of revolution. Change crossed over from social and political movements and poured right into the art, music, and fashion of the decade. Unconventional approaches to style within these cultural spaces directly responded to the commercial monotony of the 1950s, and they did so in a huge way. Experimentation with vivid colours and bold graphics that broke away from the traditional became central to personal expression.
The fashion, art, and music of the ‘60s was big, bright, bold–and British. Vibrant prints and patterns that splashed across slim silhouettes reflected the mod culture that had been rising, mod-rockers were at the center of the music scene, and bright pop-art was reaching its peak in the US after originating in the UK in the mid-1950s. The splattering of bright, contrasting colours highlighted the creative and bold spirit at the center of a youth culture that was ready to challenge society’s traditional ideals. Above all, innovative creative choices that pushed the envelope defined the decade.
Trip into the 60s with our playlist featuring the music of the decade, and see how we encapsulated the vibrant, revolutionary spirit of the 1960s into the Decade Tee design art.
